Could a position change be the key to trading Trevor Story?

Jul 22, 2021, 5:53 PM | Updated: 5:54 pm

Earlier this week, Fan Rockies analyst Ryan Spilborghs told “The Drive” he believes that shortstop Trevor Story may have played himself into an extension with Colorado.

Along with a down year at the plate, Spilborghs cited a crowded marketplace for shortstops this upcoming offseason as a reason why Story might want to hedge his bets and stay in Denver.

Among the shortstops slated to hit the market this offseason includes Toronto’s Marcus Semien, Los Angeles’ Corey Seager, Houston’s Carlos Correa and Chicago’s Javy Baez.

But what if Story played another position … say, like … center field?

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, sources say at least one team has reached out to the Rockies with the idea of moving Story to the outfield.

“Everyone is trying to be as uber-creative as they can to try to win,” an American League executive reportedly told Feinsand.

Of the 675 games Story has played defensively in his MLB career, the only position he’s played is shortstop.

However, Story’s sprint speed — 28.7 feet per second — ranks tied for 53rd in the league, meaning he could potentially cover a lot of outfield ground.

Thursday’s report comes on the heels of one from Fan Rockies Insider and Denver Post reporter Patrick Saunders on Tuesday saying six to eight teams have “engaged” the Rockies about a trade for Story.

With the July 30 Trade Deadline looming, the Story watch continues.
