Rockies Blackmon, Holland take home NL monthly honors in May

Charlie Blackmon needs to make some room on the mantle for another MLB honor, joining fellow Colorado Rockies teammate Greg Holland among those earning player of the month honors from the MLB.

Rounding out May with a bang, Blackmon was named the National League Player of the Month just a few days after being the league’s player of the week.

Holland earned his second straight NL Reliever of the Month after earning the honor for April as well.

During the month, Blackmon hit .359 in 117 at bats with 24 runs scored, six doubles, five triples, six home runs, 29 RBIs, and three stolen bases.

It’s the first time Blackmon has won a monthly award, and it is the first time a Rockies position player has earned the honor since Nolan Arenado did so in September 2015.

Holland’s win is the fourth of his career, also having won the Delivery Man of the Month in July and September of the 2013 season. In that year, Holland won the 2014 Mariano Rivera AL Reliever of the Year Award.

In May, Holland posted a 1.17 ERA with 15 strikeouts and one walk, and as of Sunday afternoon has converted 21 consecutive save opportunities to start the season, a Rockies franchise record.

The performances helped usher the Rockies to an above-.500 record in May, matching it’s April output. It is the first time in club history that Colorado’s sported winning records in both the months of April and May in the same season.

As of Monday, the Rockies are 59-36, good enough for third in the Majors, second in the National League, and first in the NL West.
