Rockies outfielder, leadoff man Blackmon named NL Player of the Week

After a week in which Charlie Blackmon went 12-for-30 with three home runs, the Colorado Rockies outfield has been named National League Player of the Week, the MLB announced Tuesday afternoon.

Last week, Blackmon hit .400 with 12 RBIs, six runs scored, one triple, one double, and a stolen base in seven games.

Among the highlights, Blackmon had his first multi-home run game of the 2017 campaign, going 2-for-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 23.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, via an MLB news release, the four-RBI game gave Blackmon a Major League-leading 40 RBIs through 47 games, the fewest number of team games to reach the benchmark from the leadoff spot since 1920 when the stat was first recorded.

In a season in which Colorado’s off to its best start in franchise history, Blackmon is one of the brightest spots in the Rockies lineup.

It’s Blackmon’s fifth time earning Player of the Week honors, with his last coming Aug. 14. That was also the last time a Rockies player was named Player of the Week.

On Friday, Denver 7’s Troy Renck told “Schlereth & Evans,” “Blackmon has been their best player overall, I think, to this point offensively.”

In the most recent update to the NL All-Star voting, released Tuesday morning, Blackmon, with 520,479 votes, trails only Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.

Fellow Rockies DJ LeMahieu (5th), Nolan Arenado (2nd), and Carlos Gonzales (15th) are the only other Colorado players registering among the top of the voting tallies.
