Keyshawn Johnson has compelling case why “Prime” should take CU job

The Deion Sanders to CU train keeps gaining steam and hype.

On Saturday, it was reported the University of Colorado had offered “Prime Time” the head football coaching job. Desperate to make a splash, the Buffs just finished an extremely forgettable 1-11 season that saw them close on a six game losing streak. On Monday, Sanders confirmed to a reporter he was indeed offered the job.

Former Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell was fired halfway through the year, and interim coach Mike Sanford delivered a win against Cal but not much more. CU gave up at least 42 points in all six games to conclude the season, including 63 to Utah on Saturday in an ugly 63-21 loss.

With Sanders guiding Jackson State to a perfect 11-0 record thus far, he’s been a hot name to get a Power 5 head coaching job. But a lot of those vacancies are starting to get filled, so it definitely feels like CU is holding out for him.

On Monday morning, former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson was on his radio / TV show “Keyshawn, JWill & Max” and was asked if he thinks the Buffs’ job is big enough for Sanders. Not only did he say yes, but he argued it was a great fit. Check it out.

There’s a lot of exciting stuff in that answer, including about how Prime could recruit California, Arizona, Texas and Florida, but also get the best high school players to stay in Colorado and play college football at CU. That’s been a problem for years. And you can look no further than the McCaffrey family that Johnson mentioned. None of Ed’s sons stayed in state after playing high school football at Valor Christian.

Johnson’s endorsement is yet another sign this hire could actually happen. Now we wait and see if AD Rick George, and all the higher ups at CU can actually get it done.

That’s probably a bigger hurdle than anything.
