Broncos DE Dre’Mont Jones wins some hardware for his game in London

Nov 2, 2022, 9:17 AM

The Broncos not only won a big game last Sunday.

One player took home a significant award.

Denver defensive end Dre’Mont Jones was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday morning for his performance against the Jaguars. He had seven tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss in the game across the pond. Jones also won the award back in 2019 for a stellar performance against the Lions in Week 16.

Jones is one of four defensive ends in franchise history to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining Derek Wolfe (2015), Elvis Dumervil (2007) and Alfred Williams (1996). Wolfe now hosts Afternoon Drive with DMac every weekday from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. on 104.3 The Fan.

Jones is slated to be a free agent after this season, but should be a top priority for Denver GM George Paton to re-sign, either during the year or this spring. Paton traded Bradley Chubb on Tuesday before the NFL’s deadline, clearing the way for one less big contract extension that needed to get signed. That money could go to Jones.

“He is one of our core players (and) we want him on here a long time. We’ll just leave it at that,” Paton said of Jones on Tuesday afternoon.

This season, Jones has started all eight games for the Broncos, recording 31 tackles, 5.5 sacks, six quarterback hits, eight tackles for losses and one forced fumble. His 5.5 sacks are tied for the team lead and are one shy of tying his career high (6.5) set in 2020.

He’ll look to build on this award and performance the rest of the way, as a big payday likely awaits Jones in the near future. And maybe third career AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors down the road as well.
