Clayton: The Broncos have been great in one area on offense

Oct 13, 2021, 4:42 PM

Say what you want about the Broncos struggling offense the past two weeks, but there are a couple of unbelievable numbers.

Despite the losses of Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler, the Broncos have some of the surest hands in the National Football League. In five games, they have had only five dropped passes. That’s remarkable.

The Denver Post reported that wide receiver Tim Patrick hasn’t dropped a pass this year. Even better, he hasn’t dropped a pass since his rookie season. All told, he’s had 123 consecutive targets in which he hasn’t dropped a pass. And he entered the year as the fourth receiver.

Courtland Sutton has been targets 39 times and has 25 catches. I don’t think he’s had a drop.

That speaks a lot for the coaching and the dedication of the players. Coaches teach the fundamentals. Receivers try to work on their techniques by catching passes.

There were problems last year with drops. Now, the Broncos didn’t have Sutton a season ago because of his ACL tear. Jeudy was a rookie, and he was up and down catching the ball. That’s not surprising for a receiver in his first year. He seemed to resolve that problem in camp. He should be able to return in about two weeks. That will help the offense.

As a group, the Green Bay Packers have the surest hands in the league. They have only one drop. Dallas, Seattle, Cleveland are next with two. But for the Broncos to be at five, that’s impressive.

Pittsburgh lead the league with 13. The Los Angeles Chargers have 11 and the New York Giants have 10.

Despite some offensive woes, the Broncos have been doing one thing exceptionally well on that side of the ball.
