Drew Lock gives refreshing insight into Broncos QB battle

Aug 18, 2021, 9:14 PM | Updated: 9:14 pm

On the same day there was some indication of separation in the Broncos quarterback battle, Drew Lock showed some refreshing honesty in talking about the competition and how it has affected him.

Lock started his session with the media on Wednesday with the same diplomacy he has shown throughout OTAs and training camp, saying he’s focused on taking care of his business and leaving the competition evaluation to others.

But when Denver’s young gunslinger was asked if it’s difficult to not think about who’ll be named the starting quarterback, he said, “Of course.”

“The human nature is to dive into it, think about it and almost over analyze sometimes. That’s just humans being humans,” Lock said. “To say that I’ve never done that in this process — I’d be lying to you.”

But Lock said he’s grown throughout this process, saying, “It really comes down to the basics — control what you can control and worry about yourself and how you can get better and make this team better.”

Lock admitted that at first he was “frustrated” at finding himself in the unusual circumstance of a competition for his job, that he “didn’t play well enough” to avoid this challenge.

“It’s really never happened to me in my football career. I did a lot of soul searching — figuring out what I need to focus on and how I need to go about it,” Lock said.

But as time went on, Lock said he developed a “sense of gratitude” to be able to come out and fight for his job, and he thinks it made him a “better football player.”

“I do think I’ve shown growth. I’m going to let (the coaches) decide if that’s enough for me to be the starter,” Lock said. “If I were to be named the starter, I’d be confident going into the year based off the growth that I’ve made up to this point.”
