Bridgewater poised to make “biggest impact” for Broncos

Jun 30, 2021, 10:23 AM

General manager George Paton traded for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in April to finally begin the long-awaited quarterback battle with Drew Lock.

NFL analyst Gil Brandt believes Bridgewater will be one of the top 10 traded players to have a “big impact” this season.

“The Broncos have not been shy about their interest in upgrading at quarterback, with new general manager George Paton trying to land Matthew Stafford and Denver being linked to Aaron Rodgers,” Brandt wrote. “As of now, the team has been limited to acquiring Bridgewater to push incumbent Drew Lock for the starting job. But Bridgewater’s presence won’t keep the Broncos from pursuing Rodgers or Deshaun Watson if either quarterback ends up available.”

The presence of any veteran quarterback is surely going to make an impact for the Broncos, if only to push Drew Lock to reach his full potential.

Paton has consistently said the team likes Lock’s potential, and he has praised the quarterback’s work this offseason.

Lock, who is 8-10 in two seasons as starter, tied for the league lead with 15 interceptions in 13 starts for the Broncos last season, and his passing rating ranked 32nd.

Since 2015, the Broncos have the worst Total QBR (45.2) in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Bridgewater will at least bring the potential of a strong quarterback competition between him and Lock.

Over Bridgewater’s six seasons in Minnesota, New Orleans and Carolina he has a 26-23 career record.
