Report: Bill Schmidt named Rockies interim general manager

The Colorado Rockies are expected to announce longtime scouting vice president Bill Schmidt as the team’s interim general manager, per MLB.com’s Thomas Harding.

Schmidt, 59, replaces the outgoing Jeff Bridich, who resigned as general manager last week.

“After discussions with the baseball department heads, we have come to the conclusion that Bill is the right person for interim GM,” said Rockies president Greg Feasel. “Bill’s experience and his relationships from top to bottom throughout our organization, including the players, coaches and staff on the field, more than qualify him for this role.”

With more than three decades of experience, Schmidt directed the scouting department from his arrival in Colorado in 1999 before being named vice president of scouting in January 2007. Prior to the Rockies, Schmidt also scouted for the Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and the MLB Scouting Bureau.

Schmidt’s day-to-day duties as interim general manager will include overseeing all aspects of the Rockies’ baseball operations, per a team release.

A search for a permanent general manager will be conducted following the MLB postseason later this year.
