Might it be wise for George Paton to do little this offseason?

Mar 9, 2021, 6:30 AM

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has a lot on his plate in his first season on the job. Will he work out a long-term deal with Justin Simmons? Will he keep Von Miller in orange and blue? Who does he want at quarterback?

But perhaps the best thing for Paton to do in his first year as general manager would be to do nothing.

Paton signed a six-year deal to take over the reins from John Elway, inheriting a quarterback and coaching staff. And entering a lame duck year with his staff, the best thing Paton can do is hold pat.

Don’t draft a quarterback. Don’t trade for Deshaun Watson. Don’t sign any big free agents. Don’t do anything.

Bring back Drew Lock, Vic Fangio and Pat Shurmur. They will most likely struggle, then Paton can draft his quarterback and hire a coaching staff he actually wants.

On the surface, it doesn’t sound like a great idea for a first time GM to not make any major changes to a team that was 5-11 the previous year. But Paton signed a six-year deal. He has plenty of time to get his guys and make the Broncos great once again. In order to do that, however, he needs to get rid of the current coaching staff.

Sorry, but Paton isn’t creating the next great Broncos team with Fangio as his head coach.
