Drew Lock is demonstrating he’s not the Broncos future at quarterback

Nov 12, 2020, 6:15 AM | Updated: 7:13 am

It’s been 11 starts for Drew Lock, and it’s still unknown if he’s the future of the Denver Broncos.

In his rookie season, Lock showed that he deserved to start all 16 games of the 2020 season after starting his career with a 4-1 record. Lock didn’t put up the “Star Wars” numbers that everyone hoped for. In fact, Lock’s numbers compared nearly identical took Trevor Siemian’s numbers in his first five games. We all know how that worked out.

Lock’s numbers have gone down dramatically this season from last season. He has a 56.5 completion percentage, which ranks 33rd among all NFL quarterbacks. In six games, the second-year quarterback has only six touchdown passes to go with six interceptions.

So why is Lock proving that he’s not the guy?

Switching offensive coordinators hasn’t helped Lock in his young career so far, so that has hurt him. But only to a certain degree.

After watching much film this season and hearing from multiple analysts, Lock isn’t even improving on the little things. He continues to throw off his back foot because he trusts his strong arm too much. Lock continues to run out of the pocket when he doesn’t need too, and his passing game would improve if he would learn to step up in the pocket and fire the ball down field.

Another issue is that Lock isn’t making the simple reads. Multiple times this season Lock has had wide open receivers for short yardage, but he tried forcing the ball to other receivers down field. If Lock can learn to trust his receivers on short passing concepts, he can realize that they can make big plays too.

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky tweeted that Lock doesn’t see coverage change pre-snap to post-snap and focuses on his No. 1 receiver too often.

If Lock can fix these issues — understand he needs to make the simple plays to be effective in the passing game and have better footwork — he will have a lot more success and can prove to Broncos Country he is the future of the franchise.
