Schlereth: Broncos need to ‘invest in offensive linemen who can play’

In his latest mock draft, Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt had the Denver Broncos turning to the offensive line at the No. 10 position, drafting Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard.

Klatt said that among the appealing aspects of selecting Dillard is that he’s “sticky.”

“He never lets his man get off. He’s always sticky. He’s always getting the block,” Klatt said.

But, perhaps more important, Dillard is the “best available offensive lineman” for a Broncos team that needs help at the position, Klatt said.

“What Denver needs, they need offensive line help. I think Andre Dillard’s the best available offensive lineman because he’s sticky,” Klatt said.

The Broncos needing offensive line help is something that “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said he’s been advocating for years.

And though Dillard may not completely fit with the “offensive perspective and philosophical” approach Broncos new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello may implement, Schlereth said he agrees with Klatt in that Denver needs to “invest in offensive linemen who can play” in order to protect new quarterback Joe Flacco.

“You are rebuilding. You do need to invest in offensive linemen who can play. You do need to invest in tight ends. You do need to invest in the middle of the field guys that can separate from the receiver position,” Schlereth said. “But, most importantly, if Joe Flacco truly is the guy to lead your franchise for the next four or five years, then you damn well better protect him because he cannot protect himself.

“He is not one of those guys who’s going to scramble away.”
