Stokley: Broncos shouldn’t force issue with drafting QB at No. 10

As the Senior Bowl rolls on from Mobile, Alabama, the talk about the Denver Broncos going after a quarterback early in this year’s draft, specifically Drew Lock, continues to buzz.

But “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley said on Tuesday if the Broncos don’t find a quarterback they love drafting at No. 10, don’t force the issue.

“Don’t force the issue on the quarterback position. OK? Just because you need one, you don’t have one, you’re looking for a young one, if he’s not there … there’s going to be a lot of other really good players around that you can select,” Stokley said.

Stokley said the Broncos could continue to build upon a strong rookie class in 2018 and continue to add depth.

“Let’s continue to build this football team with good football players so when we do, eventually, find that quarterback, you have a great foundation and a great nucleus to help that guy out,” Stokley said. “So, I’m fine with not selecting a quarterback at No. 10 if they don’t love the guy.”

Earlier Tuesday, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said the focus tends to be on the quarterback position in developing a plan to fix the Broncos, but there’s a lot more than that needs to be done to remedy Denver’s roster.

“We tend to just look at quarterbacking, gravitate to the quarterback issue, but it’s rest of this team and the roster of this team that leaves a lot to be desired,” Schlereth said. “So, they still have a ton of work to do this offseason period, this free agent period and this draft, before this team is ready to compete at the level that we’re watching right now.”

Schlereth said that, compared to the teams in the playoffs right now, the Broncos are several drafts and free agent periods away from fixing its roster issues.

“I think, ultimately, when I watch the playoffs, I realize how incomplete this football team is,” Schlereth said.
