Broncos round out coordinators jobs, hire Scangarello to run offense

Make it official: The final piece of the Denver Broncos coordinator puzzle has been put in place, as the team announced the hiring of Rich Scangarello as offensive coordinator on Wednesday.

“With the addition of Rich Scangarello as our offensive coordinator, we’re getting an experienced coach who was a trusted and valued assistant with Kyle Shanahan for three seasons,” said Broncos head coach Vic Fangio in a team release. “He worked wonders with all the quarterbacks who started for San Francisco during the previous two years as quarterbacks coach.

“With his background and knowledge, it’s the perfect time for Rich to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL. I find this opportunity for Rich very similar to when I first became a defensive coordinator many years ago, and he is ready to take this step in his career.”

Scangarello fills the offensive coordinator role following the departure of senior personnel adviser Gary Kubiak, who by many accounts was pegged for the job after Fangio was hired last week.

A first-time offensive coordinator in the NFL, Scangarello spent the past two seasons under the tutelage of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. The two were also paired together with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015, with Shanahan as offensive coordinator and Scangarello as an offensive quality control coach.

Despite just four years of NFL experience under his belt, Scangarello does have an extensive background in coaching college football, including offensive coordinator roles with Wagner College (2016), Northern Arizona (2012 to 2014), Millsaps College (2010 and 2011), UC Davis (2008), and Carleton College (2001).

The hiring comes a day after Fangio tapped former Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell as his defensive coordinator, rounding out all three coordinator positions with special teams coordinator Tom McMahon staying on with the team.
