With more offense the NFL’s future, the Broncos are ‘stuck in the past’

What NFL fans saw Monday night between the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs might just be the future of the sport, along with the sobering reality of the present for the Denver Broncos.

The high-octane offensive shootout that featured 105 total points and 1,001 yards of combined offense led to “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Cecil Lammey thinking the Broncos “don’t look anything like either one of these teams.”

“What we saw, in an amazing Monday Night game — an edge of your seat, riveting, gripping, fun, thrilling, exciting Monday Night game (between the) Rams and Chiefs — the Broncos aren’t that,” Lammey said. “They’re stuck in the past.”

And if what fans saw on Monday is indeed the future of the NFL, the Broncos are “way behind,” Lammey said.

“That’s what the NFL wants. It’s what fans want. Certainly, this modern age of fan loves the scoring, loves the excitement, loves the back and forth nature,” Lammey said.

But, how do the Broncos catch up to the likes of the Rams, Chiefs, and New Orleans Saints? Speed, according to Lammey’s co-host, Mike Pritchard.

“You don’t have the quarterback, yet. What do you do? OK, you go out and get a 4.2, 4.3 guy,” Pritchard said. “You can find one of those receivers. They don’t have to run the greatest routes. Make sure that they can catch, but absolutely make sure they’re a 4.2, a 4.3 guy.”

Pritchard also said Denver should complement its speedy receiver with a “difference-making tight end.”

“You go get a tight end who’s a matchup problem,” Pritchard said. “There are more and more of those guys out there.”

Add those ingredients, and Lammey says it’s a recipe for excitement for Denver.

“You’ve got a fanbase that’s energized, and then you’ve got a team that’s one of the more exciting ones in the NFL because right now it’s middle of the pack at best for Denver,” Lammey said. “Based on what we saw last night, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”
