Bye: ‘Unforgivable’ Broncos HC Joseph’s unsure on replay footage

Following a controversial decision not to challenge a failed two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said he was unsure about his own team’s replay protocol.

In a press conference Monday, Joseph said he was “not sure” about what footage his staff upstairs sees to help determine whether to challenge a play, a missed detail “Stokley and Zach” co-host Zach Bye called “unforgivable.”

“At the very minimum, you’ve got to know what your guys are looking at,” Bye said on Monday.

Despite what appeared to be a successful two-point conversion in television replays, Joseph and the Broncos did not challenge the call on the field that quarterback Case Keenum was down before crossing the goal line.

The quarterback sneak would have put Denver up 22-19 late in the fourth quarter. Instead, the Chargers took at 22-20 lead on a field goal the following drive, leaving it to the Broncos to conduct late-game heroics to pull off a 23-22 last-second win.

Bye’s co-host, Brandon Stokley, said the admission of not knowing his team’s replay protocol tarnishes perhaps the biggest win of Joseph’s head coaching career.

“I’m not putting it all on Vance. He has to know what they’re looking at, and now he has to correct those mistakes and get it figured out,” Stokley said. “And if people have got to go, people have got to go.

“It’s too big of a thing, too big of a deal in the NFL if you don’t have the proper people looking at your challenges.”
