Schlereth: Broncos o-line better beware of rejuvenated J.J. Watt

Oct 31, 2018, 12:03 PM

Don’t look now, Mark Schlereth said on Wednesday, but “J.J. Watt is J.J. Watt again,” which could spell disaster for the Denver Broncos offensive front.

“I played against the late, great Reggie White. … Frightening when that guy lines up over you. I have never seen J.J. Watt’s equal, including Reggie White, when it comes to going up and down the line of scrimmage and dispensing justice upon whoever he lines up against,” the “Schlereth and Evans” co-host said.

Through the first eight games of the Houston Texans season, J.J. Watt has tied his career high in forced fumbles and is on pace for 16 sacks.

“You think Billy Turner struggled last week? Billy Turner cannot block J.J. Watt one-on-one. Impossible,” Schlereth said of the Broncos right tackle. “Connor McGovern cannot block J.J. Watt one-on-one. Max Garcia cannot block J.J. Watt one-on-one.”

Schlereth said that if it were just Watt on the Texans defensive line, it wouldn’t be such an issue. But Watt’s flanked by the likes of Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney, who have combined for 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown this season already.

“You’ve got some players,” Schlereth said. “So, you want to adhere to the formula, you’d better run it 40 times. I’m just letting you know.”
