Pritchard ‘concerned’ over Phillip Lindsay reps with Royce Freeman out

Oct 19, 2018, 6:03 PM

Though head coach Vance Joseph said he’s hopeful Royce Freeman can “make it” to Kansas City next weekend, the Denver Broncos rookie running back may miss some time with an ankle injury.

However, Freeman’s health shouldn’t be the only concern for the Broncos, says “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard.

With the third-round pick down, undrafted rookie Phillip Lindsay could see an increased role in the offense, something Pritchard said he hopes doesn’t jump too much.

“I’m also concerned if you want to increase the workload of Phillip Lindsay, though. I get it. He’s electrifying. He’s really, really good. But I still would have a pitch count,” Pritchard said. “I don’t want to see Phillip carrying the ball 30 times a game. I want to see this guy have longevity.”

While productive — with 555 yards from scrimmage and averaging 6.2 yards per touch — Lindsay hasn’t necessarily been utilized all that often for the Broncos this season.

Through seven games, Lindsay has just 90 touches, including 75 rushing attempts and 15 receptions on 20 targets. In the same time, Freeman has had 75 touches, including four receptions and 71 rushing attempts.

Denver will likely turn more to veteran running back Devontae Booker with Freeman down. The third-year back has just 29 touches in seven games, including 13 rushing attempts and 16 receptions.
