Flying ‘under the radar’ this offseason a good thing for the Broncos

Jul 3, 2018, 8:19 AM

The highly-sought, highly-watched free agent this offseason was Kirk Cousins, not Case Keenum. The sexy pick for the Denver Broncos in this year’s NFL Draft would have been a quarterback, not necessarily pass rusher Bradley Chubb.

But, for what the Broncos may appear to lack in splash they make up for in substance — and the ability to surprise — “Pritchard and Cecil” co-hosts Mike Pritchard and Cecil Lammey said Monday.

“I like the fact that they’re not splashy, and here’s why: They’re under the radar,” Lammey said.

Following the draft in late April, many of the immediate NFL power rankings found the Broncos hovering in the 20s.

And just last week, NFL.com ranked head coach Vance Joseph near the bottom of the league, ahead of just two coaches at No. 30.

But, without the flash comes the ability to surprise teams, Lammey said.

“You’re going to have teams coming to Denver … and they’re going to overlook the Denver Broncos because they aren’t splashy and they haven’t been getting the headlines,” Lammey said.

Pritchard said Broncos Country should be “OK” with the low key offseason because Denver can then “surprise folks.”

“You want to rise up and punch somebody in the mouth and they don’t even expect it, here’s your opportunity,” Pritchard said.

But perhaps more important, Pritchard said, is the Broncos understand they’re flying under the radar, and he wants to see this football team fight back after a historically poor 2017 season.

“Forget that you got humbled and you came tumbling down that mountaintop after Super Bowl 50,” Pritchard said. “A lot of the players have moved on and you still have some holdovers, but those holdovers are specials. And those holdovers better understand and have pride about their performance and come back in 2018 fighting.

“I want to see this football team fight.”
