Lammey: The sooner the Broncos elevate its ‘young core,’ the better

Time is a precious asset, and “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Cecil Lammey does not want the Denver Broncos to waste it.
On Friday, Lammey said it’s imperative for the Broncos to begin shedding the weight of “complacent” veterans and poor picks from draft classes past and move on to what he sees as the future core in Denver.
“… The sooner they get rid of those guys, the better this team will be,” Lammey said.
Among the ways Lammey said could begin elevating its younger stars is to give rookie pass rusher Bradley Chubb a captain’s “C” this season.
“Slap a ‘C’ on that kid’s chest,” Lammey said. “Why? Because he’s the future of the team. He’s the future leader of the young core, and the fast they can get to the young core, the better.”
Lammey said the Broncos can make an example out of Chubb, who he said can “be special” in the NFL.
“The physical talent is there. the work ethic is there. the desire is there, the football intelligence is there, and the leadership ability is there,” Lammey said. “So, I don’t care if he’s a rookie or not. Give him a ‘C’ and make him a captain of this team, because that’s who you want the players to be.
“You want your players to be like Bradley Chubb.”
On Friday, Lammey also said he’s not for “just handing over the keys” to running back Devontae Booker with rookie running back Royce Freeman being a better pro prospect.
“The faster you can get to the good guy, the better off you’re are, “ Lammey said.
Lammey said he does want Booker to receive the bulk of first-team reps to find out if he can live up to the “potential” Denver saw in him when they took him in the fourth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
“I want to see Devontae Booker get those first-team reps, and not just some rotation here and there and here’s De’Angelo Henderson and then here is Royce Freeman. Really test Booker, unless you already have written him off,” Lammey said. “And if that’s the case, then why is he getting first-team reps?”
