Vance Joseph has ‘no concern’ with Baker Mayfield measurements

No, Baker Mayfield wasn’t ducking the Senior Bowl measurements.

The Oklahoma Sooners quarterback prospect, amid speculation about his delayed arrival to the annual college all-star game this week, said after practice on Tuesday that he had a family emergency that he needed to take care of

“My mom’s not doing too great. Family first. Always. Doesn’t matter what the situation is, I would never put myself before my mom,” Mayfield said.

“… It wasn’t about delaying measuring. I’ll measure tomorrow if it’s that big of a deal. I don’t care. Like I said, family first.”

Mayfield didn’t get measured Wednesday morning, however. He did it Tuesday night.

Officially coming in at 6-foot 3/8 inches and 216 pounds, markedly shorter than his North team counterpart Josh Allen, who came in just shy of 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds.

And even though his small stature was the one thing that stood out to Alfred “Big Al” Williams among all the Senior Bowl quarterbacks on Day 1 of practices, Denver Broncos head coach said it doesn’t matter much to him.

“You watch Drew Brees play. He’s figured it out. He’s a very successful quarterback,” Joseph said of the 6-foot-tall New Orleans Saints quarterback. “Guys figure it out. Players play. Good players figure it out. I wouldn’t be concerned about that.”

The Broncos, who are coaching the North squad for this year’s Senior Bowl, specifically requested to have Mayfield on their team to get a closer look at the 2017 Heisman winner.

“We want to coach all of the best players here. That’s why we are here, obviously,” Joseph said. “The quarterbacks are always a big deal as far as conversations, but there are a bunch of good players we want to see.”
