‘No more perfect time’ for Menelik Watson to pop the question

Aug 27, 2017, 1:34 AM

At first, as Menelik Watson took to the Denver Broncos sideline to pop the question to his then-girlfriend, Azania Stewart, she thought he was fooling around.

“She didn’t think I was serious at first, but then I got down,” Watson said.

Amid the back-and-forth of the gridiron tussle between the Broncos and Green Bay Packers, the new Broncos tackle didn’t know if he was going to do it. But he did.

And his now-fiancé said yes.

“(It was her) first NFL game. She’s about to head back overseas to start her season. She leaves tomorrow, so it’s just something I’ve been thinking about for a while, been contemplating it,” Watson said.

“No more perfect time to do it than now in the stadium, at my first game in front of a beautiful crowd.”

It might be the last time Watson and Stewart, a center for Great Britain women’s national basketball team, see each other for a while, as she heads back overseas to start her season.

So, Watson seized the opportunity.

“I had the opportunity. I’m not going to see her until after the season, hopefully after the Super Bowl,” Watson said. “She’s trying to book time off to come see us. We’ve got big aspirations for that. After the season, I’m sure I’ll be back in Europe and I’ll be back out there.”
