Report says Broncos could extend GM Elway as soon as this week

Jul 16, 2017, 4:14 PM

One of the biggest lingering question from the Denver Broncos offseason may soon be coming to a close.

Woody Paige of The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that the Broncos and executive John Elway are working on a long-term contract extension that could be done as early as this week and be announced publically before the start of training camp on July 27.

Broncos CEO and president Joe Ellis told The Gazette the club was “working to get it done” and that they anticipate Elway being a part of the organization “for a long time.

During a charity event in late May in which Elway was honored, the Broncos legend said he was “not going anywhere,“ and he didn’t “think there will be any doubt” a deal would get done by the season opener in September.

“As a kid, I moved around quite a bit. But, Colorado and Denver will always be my home,” Elway said.

And during the NFL Scouting Combine in early March, Elway said of the contract negotiations:

“It’s going fine. It’s moving ahead. I don’t anticipate any problems.”

Since Elway joined the Broncos as an executive in January 2011, the team has had six consecutive winning seasons and only missed the playoffs once, last season at 9-7.

Also under Elway’s tutelage, Denver’s been to two Super Bowls, winning one, and won the AFC West five-consecutive seasons (2011 to 2015).
