Reports: Broncos looking to move up in draft, possibly into top 5

Apr 27, 2017, 1:52 PM

It appears the Denver Broncos may not be totally content with sticking at the No. 20 position in Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, sources say the Broncos are “exploring options” to move up in the draft.

And Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reports that one of the teams Denver’s been in discussions with is the Tennessee Titans, who hold the No. 5 pick in the draft.

“Might be too rich to go that high, but possible,” Cole tweeted Thursday afternoon.

It’s unsure as of early Thursday afternoon what prospect the Broncos might be targeting should they move up in the draft, though Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey would be a possible candidate.

McCaffrey, who grew up in suburban Denver and is the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, has surged up draft boards in recent weeks to the No. 5 to No. 15 range after being considered a late first- or early second-round prospect earlier in the draft process.

Denver general manager John Elway talked about McCaffrey’s pre-draft visit earlier this week, downplaying the local kid angle.

“He was close. And it was free,” Elway said with a laugh. “And we wanted to meet with him. He’s a great kid. We like Christian a lot and we wanted to bring him in. It was one of those (situations where) he was in the area, so we wanted to take advantage of that to get to see him again. He’s a great kid.”

New Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said this week whoever lands McCaffrey in the draft, they’ll be “lucky to have him.”

“He’s obviously going to be a great player for someone,” Joseph said. “He solved a lot of issues for an offense, even a football team. He’s a return guy. He has some slot ability as a receiver-type back. He is a first, second, and third down back from the backfield. As far as the player, he is a great prospect in this draft.”
