Sean Payton confirmed after Monday's practice that starters will see the field. "They'll play, but we haven't gone through the role yet. I'll let you guys know," Payton said. When pressed specifically about Nix, Payton repeated: "I'll let you know when we go through the roles." ESPN reports Payton wants regulars to get at least some work, saying "You have to build calluses."
But there's a significant wrinkle: the game is on artificial turf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Nix is just seven months removed from a fractured right ankle and two surgeries. That detail alone could keep him out until the second preseason game against the Packers on August 21 at home — on natural grass.
