Shedeur Sanders to start again for Browns against 49ers

On an NFL weekend that featured two marquee matchups in Colts-Chiefs and Eagles-Cowboys, plenty of eyes were locked onto a contest between two 2-8 teams because it was the first career start for former Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders. He got the win on the road, and made enough plays to stay as the main man under center heading forward.

The 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year for Colorado threw for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception in his starting debut for Cleveland. While the numbers weren’t elite and the opponent wasn’t the best, he still made some plays that gave Browns fans a sense of hope they haven’t had since Baker Mayfield was in town.

Myles Garrett’s reaction to the throw says it all. Sanders gave that offense some much-needed life and energy.

The important thing here is that Dillon Gabriel, who suffered a concussion two games ago against Baltimore, which caused Sanders to be thrown into the fire, has now cleared concussion protocol, yet Sanders got the nod this week. Gabriel was another rookie selected in the third round out of Oregon, while Sanders was selected in the fifth round. The lefty hasn’t shown a willingness to push the ball downfield or take risks since he got the starting job in Week 5, as his average of 5.1 yards per passing attempt was the lowest among any quarterback with at least 175 passing attempts in 16 years.

Could this be the dawn of a new era for the Browns? They’re taking on the San Francisco 49ers at home this week, a team that has been decimated by injuries on defense. It will be Sanders’ first time starting in front of the home crowd in Cleveland, and he’ll surely get a lot of love from those fans.
