Shedeur Sanders gets spicy after making Browns history

Shedeur Sanders became the first Browns quarterback since the team returned to Cleveland to win in his first NFL start, during his team’s 24-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. And as is the norm with the former Colorado Buffaloes star, Sanders had some interesting things to say after the contest, too.

With his dad, the king of talk, Deion Sanders, in attendance, Coach Prime’s son had some highlights for a Browns offense that has lacked in the passing game for a while. Sanders completed 11 of 20 attempts for 209 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Browns’ defense did the rest of the job for a fairly easy win.

The Heisman Trophy candidate turned fifth-round pick was the first in 26 years, going back to 1999, to win in his rookie debut for the Browns. The team, which has been searching for a quarterback its entire existence, was 0-17 going into Sunday when a rookie debuted under center.

“A lot of people want to see me fail,” Sanders said. “It ain’t going to happen.”

Sanders was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last fall for an awesome season where he ranked in the top 10 nationally in completion percentage (74%), passing yards (4,134) and touchdowns (37) while breaking Colorado school records for passing touchdowns, passing yards, consecutive games with a touchdown pass, quarterback rating and completion percentage. He had a surprising fall in the NFL Draft, pushing him to the Browns as the team’s second rookie quarterback. The first and starter until maybe now, we’ll get back to that, Dillon Gabriel, is out with a concussion. The team has traded both veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, while Deshaun Watson remains injured.

In relief of Gabriel last weekend, Sanders really struggled. During the 23-16 loss, Sanders completed 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards and threw an interception. He was also sacked twice. Though Browns coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledged those were his first reps with the first team in months.

“Off of one week of practice, imagine what a full offseason looks like; it gets dangerous,” Sanders said.

Sanders got his chance at redemption and ran with it, leaving a good enough taste in everyone’s mouths for now that Stefanski decliined to name who the team’s starter will be moving forward.

“I was a fifth-round pick, I got skipped by everybody. At least five times,” Sanders said. “I still got an opportunity to play, so why can I be mad? Money’s different, but thankfully I got a good family.”

After today’s 24-10 win over the Raiders, Browns HC Kevin Stefanski declined to name a starting QB for next week’s game vs. the 49ers.
