Broncos move up in the ranks of NFL’s most valuable franchises

The Denver Broncos jumped back into the top half of the most valuable franchises in the NFL this season after being No. 17 on the list a year ago

When the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group (WPFOG) officially acquired the Denver Broncos franchise in August 2022, the franchise was worth $4.65 billion, the 10th-highest mark in the league, per Sportico. While neither the Broncos nor any other franchise in the league were close to touching the enterprise that is Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys, the Broncos were not far off from the other teams in the top 10.

However, a rough two years in the Mile High City caused the franchise’s value to drop all the way to just the 17th-highest value in the league in 2024, at $5.9 billion. With an underwhelming amount of winning happening with Russell Wilson under center, the Broncos’ growth plateaued a little bit and allowed a handful of other franchises to jump them on the list.

After the Broncos had a very successful campaign in 2024 as they made the playoffs for the first time since 2015, the year they won Super Bowl 50, the organization’s value jumped back up a couple of spots over the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with a value of $6.55 billion.

Since 2020, the first year that Sportico began releasing the value list every preseason, the Broncos have only been in the bottom half of the league the one time in 2024.

Sportico defines a franchise’s valuation as “The sum of the enterprise value of an NFL franchise combined with the value of team-related businesses and real estate holdings.”

Given that the Broncos continue to buy more real estate around the Burnham Yard site in downtown Denver for a potential new stadium at the start of the next decade, they’re only moving up in that aspect. Combine them with the success they’ve had on the field over the years, the value of the WPFOG’s equity in a wide variety of things and the fact that they are at the beginning of what could be a long championship window, the franchise should only continue to climb up from No. 15 in the coming years.

For the rest of the AFC West, the Raiders hold the crown of the division’s most valuable organization, as they found themselves at No. 9 on the list with a valuation of $7.9 billion. The Chiefs slotted in right behind the Broncos at No. 16 ($6.53 billion) while the Chargers were down at No. 21 ($6.21 billion). The Cowboys, Rams (owned by KSE, who also owns the Nuggets and Avalanche) and Giants were the only three franchises to be valued above $10 billion.

What’s the best way for a franchise to increase its value? To win the Super Bowl, of course, which is what the Eagles did a season ago. As a result their value saw a 25% growth as they jumped up a few spots on the list to No. 6. It’s no secret that the time is now for Denver to win a Super Bowl, as quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton have been outspoken about doing so throughout training camp.
