Sean Payton says it will be ‘painful’ for Broncos to watch loss, have ‘bitter taste’

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton looked about as despondent as the team’s fans on Sunday afternoon after a painful loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Broncos were walked off by a 45-yard Indy field goal at the buzzer, losing 29-28 and dropping to 1-1 on the season.

Unfortunately, none of this should’ve happened.

First of all, the Colts got a second chance at the game-winning kick after the Broncos committed a leverage penalty. It was initially called against Eyioma Uwazurike, but eventually changed to Dondrea Tillman.

Regardless, Indy kicker Spencer Shrader missed a 60-yarder, but after the 15-yard penalty, drilled his next one with ease.

Throw in a late Bo Nix interception and a Wil Lutz missed 42-yard field goal and the Broncos had plenty of opportunities to close this one out.

They didn’t, and you could tell a soft-spoken Sean Payton knows they let a golden chance slip away.

“It’ll be painful to watch that film, and yet we’ll get the corrections made. So, it starts with me, our staff, but we had a number of opportunities to not be in that position late. Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the foot too many times,” Payton said.

With an upcoming schedule that includes the Chargers, Bengals and Eagles, the Broncos needed to get to 2-0. They didn’t, and Payton knows that Denver players are going to have a tough time swallowing this unfathomable loss.

“There will be a bitter taste in our mouth for a little bit. And it’s because we put ourselves in a position to control that game late and then it slipped out of our hands. So, that’s hard,” Sean Payton said.

It’s hard on the coach, hard on the players and hard on Broncos Country.

If the standings in the AFC West are tight in December, or for a playoff spot, you can bet we’ll look back on this choke job all year long.
