Sean Payton says Broncos ‘got to get better fast’ after another walk-off loss

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has seen this movie before.

And so has the fanbase.

For a second week in a row, the Broncos were walked-off at the buzzer to lose a football game. Last Sunday it was the Colts, this time it was the Chargers. Denver is now 1-2 on the season after another heartbreaking loss. L.A. is 3-0 and atop the AFC West after the 23-20 victory.

Payton wasn’t quite as upset in his postgame press conference as last week, but he did seem irked about the penalties the Broncos committed. On the day, they were flagged 10 times for 90 yards.

“Obviously, a disappointing finish to a hard fought game,” Sean Payton said. “There were a lot of things we did well and then there we some things we obviously didn’t do as well. We had too many penalties.”

Later in the media session, Payton got asked about being 2-13 on third-down, and he went right back to the flags.

“The penalties are what we’re doing. But look, there a handful of things, we’ll look at the film tomorrow and, I’m referencing minus plays, that we’ll be frustrated with,” Payton said.

The Broncos punted seven times and could never really get into an offensive rhythm. Still, with a 20-13 lead deep into the fourth quarter, this is another game they should’ve won.

Instead, the hole in the division is already two games. Sean Payton knows they need to get this thing turned around in a hurry.

“Tomorrow’s an important day. Tomorrow’s more important than the game we just played. Because we’re in this accelerated… we’ve got to get better fast. And if we do, I think this will be alright,” Payton said.

Broncos Country isn’t feeling alright, but it is still September. Sean Payton doesn’t sound overly worried, but through three weeks of the season, you can make a strong case Denver should be undefeated.

Instead, two losses at the buzzer has everyone wondering how and why this team can’t finish football games.
