Sean Payton heaps praise on ‘one of the stars of our league’ in Josh Allen

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has planned for a lot of excellent opposing quarterbacks over the years.

He’s got a massive test on Saturday when Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills come to town.

The Broncos will host the Bills in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs as slight underdogs. Denver is the better team on paper, but Buffalo has the best player in Allen. There’s a reason the oddsmakers have the Bills as small favorites.

At his press conference on Tuesday after the Broncos returned to practice, Sean Payton was asked about Allen and gushed over his many talents.

“He does so many things well,” Payton said. “The first time I really met him was out at some golf course and you realize how big he is and how physical he is. So, he’s hard to bring down, he’s powerful. And he’s probably first in the league in ‘second act’ explosives.”

Payton said those include when Allen can climb the pocket, move around and track a receiver for a big gain. In other words, the play can look dead, and Allen will make something out of it.

“He’s got tremendous legs, he’s a fantastic competitor. And so, he was the difference when that game that was close last weekend,” Sean Payton said. “It’s been a while since I’ve seen someone gain seven yards on a sneak.”

With the Bills trailing the Jaguars late, not only did Allen lead a game-winning touchdown drive, he actually gained 10 yards on a quarterback sneak to put them near the goal-line. Allen punched in the TD one play later.

You could tell Payton was willing to talk about Allen all day, but ultimately closed with some high praise.

“Look, he’s one of the stars of our league and you see it year-in and year-out,” Payton said.

Allen is a star, but he’s still missing an elusive Super Bowl ring.

Sean Payton and the Broncos hope to make him wait at least one more season to become a champion.
