Sean Payton brushes off Broncos being underdogs, will count on home fans

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton got asked on Wednesday about his team being home underdogs to the Green Bay Packers this weekend.

The Broncos have won 10 games in a row and are 11-2, sitting atop the AFC, so it’s definitely a bit surprising.

That said, the Packers certainly aren’t slouches, winners of four in a row and sporting a 9-3-1 record. Many think they could represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this season.

Sean Payton brushed the question off a bit, at least initially, while also acknowledging Green Bay is a solid squad.

“I don’t really pay attention to that. I mean, look, we know we’re playing a good football team. And so, that’s something that we have no control over,” Payton said.

This is the first of four challenging games for the Broncos to finish the season. Luckily, three of those are at Empower Field at Mile High, which Payton is pointing out as a big advantage.

“We’ve got four tough opponents the next four weeks. Three of the four of them are at home. We’re counting on our crowd this week. Not just at the line of scrimmage, but while they’re in the huddle,” Payton said.

Sean Payton mentioned that when the opposing quarterback is in the huddle, the play-call can get “blurry” for the rest of the team with deafening crowd noise. He cited the game against the Chiefs, a 22-19 win, as a prime example.

“I thought our last home game with Kansas City was significant. And I’m counting on it being at an even higher level. So, yeah, we’re playing a good team” Sean Payton said.

The Packers are indeed a good team, but then again so are the Broncos.

And even if the oddsmakers want to make them slight underdogs, that’s just noise before a potential Super Bowl preview on Sunday.
