Sean Payton: Broncos ‘hear some of the narratives,’ but ‘it’s a big win’ against Chiefs

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is aware of what some folks might say about his football team.

But the reality is he doesn’t care, especially after the Broncos got the biggest win of the Payton era on Sunday.

Denver kicker Wil Lutz made a walk-off field goal at the buzzer and the Broncos improved to 9-2 with a gritty 22-19 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sean Payton was in an interesting mood postgame, focused on all the good his team has done this season rather than some of the negativity that might be out there.

“Sometimes you gotta pass on something that might look attractive. But it’s finding those guys that can tune out the noise, and there’s been a lot of noise. Like a lot of, just, I don’t comment on it but anyway. And I hear some of the narratives and I just want to, like, cry,” Payton said.

It’s interesting Payton said he doesn’t comment on it but then indeed offered a comment. Whether he’s reading social media, listening to sports talk radio or consuming articles / columns, clearly Payton is plugged in.

That said, even though the offense has struggled at times, this is a very good football team. And by dropping the Chiefs to 5-5, there’s a real chance that Denver could take the division for the first time in a long time.

“But anyway it is what it is, that’s your jobs. But our jobs are to focus on the wins and to focus on — there’s a way to win each game — and the players deserve a chance to have that. And so sometimes that can vary. But in a game where a lot of guys were banged up and they were fully healthy, it’s a big win,” Sean Payton said.

There’s no doubt it was a huge win for Denver. The offense did just enough, Lutz made five field goals and the defense was clutch when it mattered most.

And at the end of the day, it doesn’t sound like Sean Payton is worried about style points. He’s worried about victories, and for a team that’s done that nine times in 11 games this season, he’s going to let you know the narratives don’t matter.
