Sean Payton discusses “24-hour rule” following Broncos’ big win over Eagles
The Denver Broncos are coming off one of the best wins in the NFL this season, but Sean Payton emphasized the importance of the 24-hour rule and flipping the page heading into this week's game in London

Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos got their signature win last week when they scored 18 unanswered points on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles to steal a victory from the defending champs. Bo Nix and the offense found their stride late, while Nik Bonitto and the defense kept the flock out of the end zone when it mattered most to hold onto the win.
That win was arguably the best in the NFL this season. People around the league took note of the potential of this Broncos team following the game, as they vaulted themselves into the conversation among the top teams in the AFC. While they’ve been the talk of the league all week, how have Payton and his players handled the win? Has the magic of the comeback stuck with the team?
SUNDAY’S WIN IS FLUSHED OUT BY MONDAY
Payton says that his squad flushed it out by the time Monday came around, as they shifted their focus to this week’s game against the New York Jets across the pond in London.
“We preach the 24-hour rule after a win or a loss. Matter of fact, you enjoy that win until your eyes go to sleep and then when you wake up, you have a new set of problems, players that are injured, maybe not injured, a new team. So you get that time. When you play a day game you have a little longer time. When you play a night game, you catch up on your sleep. I think the focus has been good,” he said after Broncos practice on Friday.
The NFL is a grueling league. The teams and players play in this league, no matter if they’re the undefeated Eagles (who are now 4-2) or the winless New York Jets. One of the most important things that a coach can do for both his players and his staff is to help them punch that reset button after any given week, no matter if the team pulls off a big upset, wins a boring game, or loses in heartbreaking fashion, three different experiences the Broncos have had through five games.
JETS’ RUN GAME IS A CONCERN FOR SEAN PAYTON
The Broncos can’t go into Sunday’s game against the Jets overlooking the opponent. Even though the Jets are still seeking their first win, they have come close to victory on two occasions, and have a talented run game along with some stars scattered around the roster that have the ability to flip any given game in a second. Payton emphasized how New York’s rush attack is something that worries him heading into the game.
“Obviously they’re running the ball extremely well, really well. We’ve seen [Jets QB Justin] Fields and his explosiveness. He’s involved in the run game. I think the runner [Jets RB Breece Hall] is having one of his better seasons,” he said.
There are no scrubs in the NFL. Yes, some teams are worse than others, but these are still some of the best football players in the world, and if the Broncos play with their food, Sunday’s game could get more interesting than some would think.
