Heading into the 1997 season, the Broncos had a very good team. They were coming off a year in which they went 13-3 and were the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

But that campaign had ended in one of the biggest postseason upsets in NFL history, a loss at home to the upstart Jaguars. As a result, there were some doubts about how Denver would respond to such a shocking setback.

In addition, there was the franchise’s tortured history. Four times they’d been to the Super Bowl, only to be defeated, in blowout fashion that got progressively worse each time.

Somehow, however, they were able to overcome these obstacles. In 1997, the Broncos won their first-ever Lombardi Trophy.

How did they do it?

Let John Elway, Howard Griffith and Neil Smith tell the story, with a little help from Alec Baldwin, in the NFL Network’s “America’s Game” episode about the 1997 Broncos.
