Report: Broncos linked to real estate transactions for potential new stadium site

Recent reports indicate that the Denver Broncos have begun to buy different plots of land in Burnham Yard, just southeast of the current stadium, to potentially gear up for a new stadium in the future

Ever since the Walton-Penner Ownership Group bought the Denver Broncos franchise for $4.65 billion back in 2022 — the most expensive sale for a North American sports franchise at the time — talks have been ongoing about potentially building a new stadium for the team. The current site of the stadium, just off of I-25 and Colfax, has been the home of the team since its inaugural year in the AFL in 1960.

Reports indicate that the Broncos could potentially be moving to a different spot in Denver if they were to build a new stadium under the Walton-Penner Group. There have been a series of multiple real estate transactions linked to the Broncos near Burnham Yard, located a bit southeast of the current stadium off of I-25 and Sixth Avenue.

The Broncos’ current lease for Empower Field at Mile High expires in 2031. If these purchases are the first domino in getting a new stadium site, that would result in the team not renewing the current lease and going with a different option. The Broncos played in the original Mile High Stadium from 1960 to 2000 before moving to Invesco Field, the first of four different names for the stadium for the 2001 season.

There have been plenty of potential stadium options rumored for the Broncos recently, including revamping the current site, moving down to Lone Tree, moving out towards the airport and more. Greg Penner said earlier this year that making the stadium a dome, or at least incorporating a retractable roof, is a possibility.

A new stadium could potentially be a new gateway for Denver to host numerous high-profile events such as the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four. Those events have been played in the nicest, newest (for the most part) stadiums across the country, a category in which Empower Field at Mile High doesn’t fit the bill.

These moves are the earliest stages of a larger move from the Walton-Penner Group, but still significant for the future of the Broncos and sports in Denver as a whole.
