Former Broncos QB Russell Wilson is somehow still a starter in the NFL

An NFL quarterback being on his fourth team in five years is normally a bad thing, but apparently not for Russell Wilson.

The former Broncos QB is now with the New York Giants after playing last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And even though the Giants spent a first-round draft pick on former Ole Miss Star Jaxson Dart, head coach Brian Daboll made his plan clear on Wednesday.

“These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,” Daboll told reporters.

For just how long Russell Wilson is New York’s No. 1 QB remains to be seen. The Giants are projected to be very bad, so if they get off to a slow start through the first four or five weeks, a switch to Dart would make sense.

But coaches on the hot seat generally like to go with veterans, so Daboll is clearly betting Russell Wilson can play well enough to save his job.

The Broncos landed Wilson in a massive trade in the spring of 2022 with the Seattle Seahawks, but it never worked out. Wilson went 11-19 as Denver’s starter, and after the 2023 season, head coach Sean Payton had seen enough. He took on the largest dead cap hit in NFL history so the Broncos could cut Wilson.

Last year he played 11 games with the Steelers, going 6-5, before they decided to move on. He took 33 sacks in Pittsburgh, which was also a problem in Denver, getting sacked 90 times in only 30 games.

The Giants are scheduled to play at Empower Field at Mile High against the Broncos in Week 7, so we’ll see if Russell Wilson is still their starter at that point in the season.

Regardless, it feels like the 36-year-old’s career is coming to a close, but he’ll get one last chance to prove there’s still something left in the tank.
