Drew Lock shows the type of fire that has been missing for the Broncos

Anyone who shows emotion, unlike players like Kyle Orton, Trevor Siemian and Joe Flacco, should be a welcome change in Denver

Drew Lock has been all over the news the past few weeks. Seemingly every day, another story emerges that somehow involves the Broncos quarterback.

One day, a teammate is actively campaigning for Deshaun Watson to replace him. The next, another is complimenting him in a way that can also be interpreted as an indictment of his past work habits.

Recently, however, there was sideline footage of Lock that caused a stir. After completing a comeback win against the Chargers on Nov. 1, the quarterback is seen interacting, for lack of a better term, with the few fans allowed into Empower Field that day.

Clearly, he’s fired up about completing a touchdown pass on the final play of the game to give the Broncos the lead. And obviously, he’s letting people in the stands know that he heard their earlier vitriol.

Some people have a problem with this behavior. They see it as a sign of immaturity in the 24-year-old quarterback.

That’s one interpretation. But it wouldn’t be an accurate one.

The video shows a player who is into the game, fired up about getting a win. It’s an example of a competitor, someone who was ready to let everyone know that he answered the bell.

Don’t think that’s accurate? Well, the video offers more evidence.

Look at the way Lock’s teammates react to his sideline antics. They’re behind their teammate. They’re fired up right along with him.

That’s not a bad thing. Quite the contrary. It’s a great thing.

Almost every great quarterback in the history of the league has some fire. That’s certainly been the case in Denver.

John Elway and Peyton Manning certainly did. Maybe they were less demonstrative, and perhaps they picked a better spot to show their emotions, but they were far from being flat-liners.

Jake Plummer is another quarterback who showed some fire on the field. Tim Tebow did, as well.

On the other hand, some of the worst signal callers in franchise history were on the other side of the equation. They were boring and uninspiring, leading to some of the dullest football ever seen in Denver.

Think Kyle Orton. Remember Trevor Siemian. Conjure up images of Joe Flacco.

Those players never showed any fire on the field. And that wasn’t a good thing.

Did Lock overreact after capping off a 31-30 win? Maybe. Maybe not.

But a quarterback who cares is a heckuva lot more fun to watch. And he has a lot better chance of being successful.

So the video of Drew Lock shouldn’t worry anyone. Broncos Country should be as fired up as Lock.
