Courtland Sutton has Bo Nix’s back, says QB ‘challenges himself to be perfect’

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton was one of the team’s lone bright spots in a 20-12 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.

Sutton had six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, hauling in the only TD toss from QB Bo Nix on the afternoon.

Nix had three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble, in what was not a stellar debut to his sophomore year. Nix knows he has to be better, while head coach Sean Payton is also taking the blame for poor play-calling.

But when Sutton met the media on Wednesday after practice, he had his QB’s back. In a lengthy answer, it was clear Sutton has the utmost faith in Nix and isn’t worried about one poor outing.

“He is a competitor. He challenges himself to be perfect. I tell you guys all the time, that is something you love to see from your quarterback. Someone who wants to be the best version of themselves because that is who they are. That is their character and competitive edge,” Courtland Sutton told reporters. 

On one hand, it’s great Nix wants to perfect. That’s the type of attitude that got the best QBs in NFL history to the top.

On the other side of the coin, Nix looked tense against the Titans. Almost like he felt the pressure of the comments Payton made this summer that Nix could be a top-5 quarterback in the league soon.

For Courtland Sutton, he’s not worried, and made it clear time and time again he believes in Nix.

“To look at him and say, ‘Hey, we got you,’ it’s something subtle,” Sutton said. “We all need to be reminded that the weight of the world is not on your shoulders, it is on all of us. We as a team go out there and perform to achieve a victory.”

A victory is what the Broncos got in Week 1, even if it was largely on the backs of the defense. Courtland Sutton did his part, but the rest of the offense still has work to do.

They’ll get another shot in three days in Indianapolis against the Colts. We’ll see if the boost of confidence from Denver’s best wide receiver helps the QB relax and play like he’s capable of.
