Just as they did last year, the Broncos promoted their veteran fullback from the practice squad to the 53-player roster after three weeks of the regular season.
Last year, it was Michael Burton; this year, with Burton on injured reserve, it’s Adam Prentice, who officially moved up to the primary roster Wednesday, taking the roster spot vacated when Dre Greenlaw landed on injured reserve last Saturday as his quad issues persisted into the regular season.
Prentice played in the first three games of the regular season as a practice-squad elevation, as Burton did last season. But with a limit of three elevations per player, the Broncos needed to add him to the 53-player roster if they wanted to use him again during the regular season.
A five-year veteran, Prentice joined the Broncos on Aug. 17 after Burton succumbed to a hamstring injury. Denver released Prentice at the roster deadline, but added him to the practice squad one day later.
As a vested veteran, Prentice was not subject to the waiver process, making it easier for the Broncos to bring him back with the promise of adding him to the 53-player roster after a few weeks, as they did with Burton and wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey last year.
BRONCOS FILL PRENTICE’S PRACTICE-SQUAD SPOT
The team added cornerback A.J. Woods to the practice squad to fill the vacancy created by Prentice’s promotion.
A University of Pittsburgh product, Woods spent last year on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. They waived him last month. He has no regular-season snaps on his ledger so far.
Woods was one of six players who had tryouts with the Broncos on Wednesday. The others were cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew, M.J. Devonshire and D.J. Miller and wide receivers Elijah Cooks and Mike Woods.
