ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos’ running-back corps has taken another injury hit.
One day after RJ Harvey landed on the injury report with a knee problem, the Broncos ruled the second-year running back out for the Week 8 showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs, robbing the Broncos of a player who ranks second on the team in both receptions (25) and yards from scrimmage (304) through seven games.
Harvey was on the field at the start of Thursday’s practice, during the period that was open to media viewing, but was listed with limited participation that day. Friday, he was not seen on the field and officially listed as a non-participant.
The absence of Harvey could create an even larger role for rookie Jonah Coleman, who led the Broncos with 54 yards on nine carries last Sunday in Arizona — including 49 on seven second-half attempts.
“I’m ready for any opportunity I’m given whenever I’m out there on the field, and I’m going to give the team my all,” Coleman said in the Broncos locker room on Friday. “So, I don’t really control if my role is big or not. Just be prepared for my opportunity when I get in the game.”
Denver has just two healthy running backs on its 53-player roster: Coleman and veteran J.K. Dobbins, who leads the team in rushing yardage and yards from scrimmage so far this season.
Dobbins is the only player in the running-back room who has not missed time due to an injury this season. Tyler Badie is on injured reserve with a thumb injury, while Coleman spent four weeks on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain.
Harvey also sat out the Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars because of a strained hamstring.
Joining him on the sideline Sunday will be safety Talanoa Hufanga, who has not practiced since suffering an ankle injury in the third quarter of the Oct. 11 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos have activated Taylor Rapp from the practice squad for two-consecutive weeks to help spell Hufanga; that appears likely to extend to three weeks in succession.
BRONCOS HAVE FOUR PLAYERS QUESTIONABLE FOR SUNDAY
Those are defensive end Zach Allen, left tackle Garett Bolles, safety Brandon Jones and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Allen and Waddle missed Wednesday’s practice and saw limited work in each of the last two days due to hamstring and chest injuries, respectively. Both left the field in the final six minutes of last Sunday’s win over Arizona, although Waddle had been dealing with a chest issue in the days prior to the Cardinals game.
Jones was added to the injury report Thursday with a hamstring problem, but was on the field at the start of Friday’s practice, after which he was listed with limited participation in the on-field work.
Bolles has practiced all three days this week on a limited basis due to a hip problem.
