DENVER — For years, the rest of the NFL has complained that the Kansas City Chiefs get every call. Brittany Mahomes sees it the other way.

The Chiefs had fourth-and-goal at the Denver Broncos’ 1-yard line with four seconds left Sunday, needing a touchdown to win. Patrick Mahomes found Rashee Rice in the middle of the Broncos defense in the end zone for what looked like the winning score.

But officials had flagged offensive lineman Jaylon Moore for a false start, and whistles were blowing as Rice made the catch. The touchdown didn’t count, and the ball went back to the 6. On the next snap, Broncos defensive lineman Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes, and Denver won 28-24 to take over first place in the AFC West.

Patrick Mahomes’ wife reacted on her Instagram story soon after.

“You can’t tell me you call that on a game winning TD, oh wait yeah I can cause it’s us,” she wrote. “That was the weakest call I have ever seen, you can’t tell me otherwise.”

Andy Reid didn’t agree with the call either.

“I didn’t see it,” the Chiefs coach said after the game. “That’s one man’s opinion. I saw him move his head. But I didn’t see a false start.”

The flag took away the Chiefs late comeback after Denver’s comeback. Down 28-24 with 1 minute, 56 seconds left, Kansas City moved inside the Denver 5, helped by a 32-yard catch from Travis Kelce. Kenneth Walker III ran 3 yards on first-and-goal to the 1.

Denver’s defense held from there. Mahomes threw incomplete on second down and then stopped Walker for no gain on third down. Kansas City used its final timeout with four seconds left, then lined up for the play that would have won the game.

Broncos coach Sean Payton gave the credit to the crowd.

“If you could tangibly point to a crowd win, if you could tangibly point and say the false start,” Payton said. “From a play caller standpoint, one to the six … that was huge.”

Penalties hurt Kansas City all day. The Chiefs were flagged 11 times for 105 yards. Denver was flagged six times for 45.

The Chiefs (5-2) have lost two straight and host the New York Jets next Sunday. The Broncos (6-2) visit the Carolina Panthers.
