Sean Payton will tell you the Denver Broncos game on Sunday slipped out of the team’s hands, and so will his players after the 29-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
The Broncos’ final three drives were a punt, a scoring-zone interception, and a missed field goal. Denver threw away at least six critical points late in the second half, all the while the team’s defense buckled to allow three field goals, including the game-winner, after halftime.
“It’s tough, because you’re right, I felt like the game slipped away from us, it got away,” Nix said. “We made errors at the end that cost us. And that started with my turnover, and then it felt like it, that’s when we kind of lost a little bit of our momentum, lost a chance at at least three points there. When you’re already in the red zone… But other than that, we played well for three quarters, but got to finish in the fourth against a good team like that.”
Veteran offensive lineman Mike McGlinchey had the same thought as the young Nix.
“It’s disappointing, obviously, you just have to, everybody’s gotta look in the mirror and figure out what they can do better to help the team get over the hump there. There’s no way we should have lost that game,” McGlinchey shared to 9News. “We had probably six or seven opportunities in the second half to end it, and we didn’t. Coach said it best after the game. You’ve got to learn to win. But in order to do that, you have to stop losing. And we gave that game away today.”
The Broncos next take on the Chargers, as part of four games in five weeks that are on the road, which began with Sunday’s Week 2 loss. Denver’s normally stout defense will hope for a rebound while the team looks for a more complete game that has eluded them through their 1-1 start.
