The Denver Broncos had just a 0.2% chance of winning at the halfway point of the fourth quarter, and yet that’s exactly what the team did, accomplishing nearly the impossible by coming back to beat the New York Giants 33-32.

The Broncos entered the fourth quarter down 19-0, but they got on the board early via a short Bo Nix touchdown pass followed by a two-point conversion. Though Denver’s defense gave the touchdown right back on a tip drill pass by Jaxson Dart, going for 41 yards to put the Broncos behind 26-8.

The offense may have had some momentum, but the comeback wasn’t even on yet. The Broncos were backed up to a third and 12 with 7:12 left on their own side of the field. At that moment, ESPN says the team had just a 0.2% chance of coming back to win. Nix hit Evan Engram to get close to the sticks, then found Pat Bryant to move them. Two minutes later, Nix ran it in from seven yards, then threw for a two-pointer to make it a 10-point game.

But the Broncos still needed to get the ball back twice, somehow.

Denver’s defense pushed the Giants’ offense into a conundrum, leaving a third and five at their own 35-yard line. Would the Giants keep the clock running or take a shot at the sticks? Dart went for the throw, and Justin Strnad snatched it out of the air to get Devner the ball at the 19 with 4:47 to play. Four plays late,r Nix hit RJ Harvey to cut the deficit to three.

The Broncos defense did it again, forcing the Giants to punt in just three plays and even getting the clock to stop once on a missed pass. This gave the Broncos the ball at their own 32 without a timeout but with just over two minutes to play. The Broncos started by going backward and quickly faced a third and 11. That’s when Nix found Marvin Mims for 31 yards to get into field goal range to possibly tie it. But Bo wasn’t done, hitting Engram for 20 yards, then finishing the job by taking it for 18 yards himself into the end zone.

The Broncos took the lead 30-26.

But Denver’s defensive clutch ended, as the Giants went 65 yards in seven plays over 80 seconds, thanks in large part to a Riley Moss pass interference, which moved the ball from Denver’s 40 to the one-yard line, also helped by a Sean Payton unsportsmanlike call for arguing the flag. Dart ran it in a play later, but the Giants missed their second extra point of the game, leaving the score at 32-30.

Nix got one more shot with the ball, and Nix instantly found Mims for 29 yards over the middle with under 30 seconds to play. The team got a spike off quickly and caught a Giant offside to move the ball all the way to the Giants’ 48. Nix then hit Courtland Sutton for 23 yards to get it to the 21-yard line. Denver spiked the ball, leaving a 39-yard try to win for Wil Lutz.

He nailed it and the Broncos won, somehow — scoring 33 points in the fourth quarter, one off the NFL record of 34 set by the Lions. It was the most points the Broncos have scored in any quarter in franchise history — four touchdowns scored by Nix.

The Broncos have come back for some crazy wins already this year, including down two touchdowns a few weeks ago against the Eagles.

Denver is now 5-2; they host Dallas next week.
