Broncos fourth quarter comeback in Philadelphia was historic

The Denver Broncos had only once come back from down 14 with 15 minutes left in a game on the road, but that changed on Sunday when the team rallied for 18 points in the fourth quarter to top the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles 21-17.

Broncos take down the reigning champs, improve to 2-112 in franchise history when trailing by 14 or more entering the fourth quarter.

The Broncos finished a 10-play 64-yard drive on a J.K. Dobbins short touchdown to start the fourth quarter. The defense then came together to force a third-straight punt. The Broncos then quickly went 72 yards in six plays, highlighted by a Courtland Sutton 34-yard catch from Bo Nix. The quarterback then found Evan Engram for an 11-yard touchdown. Sean Payton then went for two and got it when Nix found his college teammate Troy Franklin for an 18-17 lead.

The Broncos then forced another three-and-out, their third in a row. Denver’s offense ran some clock, got the ball into field goal range, and kicked a field goal to go up 21-17, leaving the Eagles with no timeouts and their backs against it. They got down the field late for a Hail Mary try, but it fell to the ground, ending the game. The Broncos’ big-time defense struggled early, but really showed up late, allowing the Eagles to complete just five passes in the fourth quarter.

It’s a good change of pace for this Broncos team, which ironically hadn’t trailed in a fourth quarter before Sunday, but lost twice at the buzzer. The Eagles had been undefeated on the year. The team now heads to London with a 3-2 record as they prepare to take on the New York Jets.
