Former Buffs star Phillip Lindsay doesn’t like timing of jersey retirements

Former CU Buffs star Phillip Lindsay is speaking on the school’s controversial decision to retire the jerseys of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.

First of all, Lindsay isn’t upset about Hunter getting his jersey retired and says you can make a case for Sanders. However, it’s the timing of the decision and all the other Buffs’ legends that were skipped that Lindsay is questioning.

The co-host of “The Drive” with Zach Bye on Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan offered this take on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s about the timing,” Phillip Lindsay said. “But it’s about the guys before them. The guys before me. It’s the guys we stand on their shoulders that they deserve that moment as well.”

Lindsay mentions the likes of former CU greats Darian Hagan, Deon Figures and Daniel Graham. He said he could go on to name about 30 more players, but they’ve earned this honor before Sanders and Hunter.

“For me it’s all about respecting history. Respecting the guys before us. They bled on the football field, they cried on this football field and we all looked up to (them). That’s all I’m saying is have some respect for those guys.”

Lindsay rushed for more than 3,700 yards in his Buffs career and scored 39 total touchdowns, so he’s certainly authorized to speak on the subject. He went on to join the Denver Broncos and bounced around with the Texans, Dolphins and Colts. He joined Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan in September of 2023, pairing up with Zach Bye on the radio each afternoon.

Ultimately, this decision from Colorado has caused a firestorm. And again, Phillip Lindsay isn’t questioning the greatness of Sanders and Hunter, he’s just wondering why they got to jump the line.

Right now, a lot of people have that same thought.
