Deion Sanders to undergo medical procedure

Deion Sanders had dealt with a plethora of health problems since he first got to Colorado in December 2022. From blood clots to bladder cancer, the 57-year-old head coach has fought through a lot to stay on the field to lead the Buffaloes every Saturday in the fall.

After the Buffs’ 35-21 loss to TCU on Saturday, Sanders said in his postgame press conference that he could possibly have more blood clots. He said his leg was throbbing and was spotted without a shoe on his left foot for most of the fourth quarter.

At his weekly media availability on Tuesday, Sanders announced that he was going to undergo a “procedure” on Tuesday afternoon. He seemed to be in good spirits about it, and joked that he was excited to take a four-hour nap with the anesthesia.

“I’m having a procedure today. Prayerfully, I’ll be right back tomorrow, because I don’t miss practice. I don’t plan on doing such, but it is what it is, and we found what we found, we knew what it was,” Sanders said.

The procedure is an aspiration thrombectomy that will aim to remove blood clots from his left popliteal and tibial arteries.

“It has nothing to do with me working in the level that I’m trying to compete at. It’s hereditary. It is what it is. It’s nothing that I could have done to stop what’s transpiring, nothing that I could have taken or something that I’m just not abiding by. It is what it is. Sometimes it’s just what it is,” Sanders explained.

The Buffs are four days away from hosting No. 22 Iowa State in an important game at Folsom Field. Sitting at 2-4 and 0-3 in conference play, Sanders’ squad needs to get a win under their belts to get the season back on track. This procedure should not impact his preparation, or the team’s preparation, for Saturday’s contest.

For those CU fans out there who are concerned about their head coach going under for another time just months after he kicked the cancer bug, he did not show any signs of concern.

“I can’t wait to get that Snoop Dogg. I call it that Snoop deal, Double G, because I never been high there in my life. I never drank, smoked anything. But when I get those surgeries, I am there on time,” Sanders joked.
