Deion Sanders maintains mystery around potential Buffs coaching changes

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have been embarrassed in back-to-back weeks and now sit with a 3-6 record. After winning nine games a season ago and making the Alamo Bowl, they’re on the outside looking in for the bowl season, and their recent play hasn’t given fans a reason to believe they can win their three final games of the season.

One thing that has been obvious over the last two blowouts is that the coaches are getting dominated. This Buffs team consistently looks unprepared, they fail to make adjustments when necessary and there has been no publicly announced change to the coaching staff after the season has gone off the rails.

It’s clear that some changes to the coaching staff are necessary, but when Sanders was asked about his during his weekly media availability on Tuesday, he gave Buffs fans an response that didn’t exactly answer a whole lot of the questions that have been raised over recent weeks.

“I might [have] already changed it, and you don’t know. I don’t do stuff and blow the whistles and make a major announcement. ‘Hey!’ I don’t do that kind of stuff. I do it and I let you guys still take shots you don’t even know, you may be shooting at the wrong target. So some things take place that you may not be privy to,” Sanders said.

He was then asked when the fanbase would notice said changes.

“That’s up to you to notice them. They may have already happened.”

This fanbase wants answers. These donors who have poured money into the program in hopes of seeing a conference championship or a berth in the College Football Playoff want answers. The alumni who haven’t seen a competitive football team in two decades — besides 2016 — want answers, and no one is getting them.

Syracuse head coach Fran Brown recently announced some changes to his coaching staff at his media availability this week. South Carolina fired their offensive coordinator this week, an announcement that was publicly announced. Heck even the Buffs had their offensive play calling change from Sean Lewis to Pat Shurmur announced in 2023 when sources leaked the news to ESPN.

Yet, it’s up to the fans in Boulder to figure out what’s going on. Maybe the changes have already been made and the on-field product looks just as bad. No average fan is going to know what changes are made behind the curtain without an announcement, but all the average fans can tell that changes are desperately needed.

Sanders has a few friends on his coaching staff. Is he prioritizing relationships over winning? Or will he make the changes necessary to get this team back to being competitive in the Big 12 in 2026?
