Coach Prime puts on special scrimmage to help CU backups

Coach Prime did something most other coaches wouldn't do this week as he put on a scrimmage to get some film for his backups who might hit the portal after the season

Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders has revolutionized the transfer portal in his three seasons as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. When he first got to Boulder, he said that he was bringing his luggage and it was “Louis” following the Buffs’ 1-11 campaign in 2022, and has brought in the most recruits via the transfer portal in the country over the last three seasons.

Some of those recruits have been hits, such as Travis Hunter, some have been fine players, such as Kaidon Salter, and some have been busts. The player turnover is higher than it’s ever been in college football in this new era of NIL, and Prime knows just how many players hop in the portal every single offseason.

This week, the Buffs head coach did something special to help out his backups who haven’t seen much, if any, playing time this season. Since the Buffs have a bye this week, he put on a scrimmage to get his backups some film that they could show to other schools in the transfer portal, a practice that’s not very common in the college football realm.

In the video posted by Well off Media on YouTube, there were plenty of players getting action that CU fans probably wouldn’t recognize. Whether they’ve been here for three years or just a few months, there was a wide variety of players getting in on the action, and they were bringing the physicality in one of their limited opportunities to get some highlights on the film reel.

There were also a handful of talented freshman players getting in on the action, including phenom quarterback Julian Lewis. He got some reps at quarterbacks, while receivers like Quentin Gibson and Quanell Farrakhan Jr., two guys who have seen game action this season, also got some quality reps in.

For the starters who weren’t playing in this scrimmage, they were right there on the sideline, supporting their teammates and hyping them up whenever someone made a play. It looked like a fun day in Boulder, and the vibes seemed to be high.

While people tend to criticize Coach Prime about plenty of things that he does on the field, there’s no question that Deion Sanders the human being is always putting his players first. He tries to put them in positions to succeed off the field, he’s focused on growing them into young men, and is trying his best to be a father figure for so many of these players.

The Buffs will be back in action next week after the bye as they prepare for a challenging contest against the Utah Utes on the road next Saturday.
