Buckle up, Nuggets fans. Infamous NBA official Scott Foster will be the crew chief for the Denver Nuggets in Sunday’s winner-take-all Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He has been on the call for 12 Game 7s since 2014, as he is the NBA’s top guy for these high-stakes games.

Foster will be joined by Josh Tiven and James Williams, with Pat Fraher as the alternate.

Foster and Williams were on the call for Game 2 of this same series, one in which the Nuggets quickly fell behind in the first half because they were getting a soft whistle from the crew while the Thunder were being allowed to make all sorts of contact. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shot 11 free throws in the first game, five of which came in the first quarter as the Thunder pulled ahead.

While a fair whistle wouldn’t have changed a lot as the Nuggets strictly got ran off the floor in Game 2, it could’ve changed the outcome of the first half and changed momentum in that game.

Foster has been on the call for a plethora of other Nuggets games, including last year’s Game 7 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Wolves shot 30 free throws in that game opposed to just 16 for Denver. It was another instance in that series of how Denver was not allowed to be as physical as Minnesota.

Since 2016, the Nuggets are 19-17 when Foster is on the call for a game, no matter if he’s the crew chief, the umpire or the referee.

The most notable Game 7 of Foster’s career came back in 2018 when he was on the call for the winner-take-all game of the Western Conference Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets. There were goaltends, continuations, non-calls — any bad call that could’ve been made in that game, Foster made it.

Foster has been deemed as “The Extender” by NBA fans over the years, as he’s made his name be known and called games in favor of teams who are losing their respective playoff series. He even has his own highlight reel, something that no ref should have.

All Nuggets fans want is a chance to be able to win down the stretch. This officiating crew will likely let the game become more physical, and the Nuggets will have to take advantage of it in order to reach a third Western Conference Finals in a six-year span.
